John Sheehan is an artist who creates works that primarily explore the interplay of colour, shape and mark-making. Continually refining his skills and approach to painting, Sheehan’s new series focuses on a lessening emphasis on site-specific references to landscape as he moves toward a more abstracted visual language. While still creating compositions that incorporate some of the motifs previously used in his work Sheehan’s latest works now act more as a theatre for his mind’s eye to revel in the intensity of the pure pigment colours he mixes and the way he places those colours within a work. Free from the need to focus on depicting actual locations Sheehan’s work is developing a freshness and vitality that allows viewers that encounter his work to immerse themselves in a contemplative state while at the same time becoming enlivened by the colours presented.
Contemplating Colour is Sheehan’s second solo exhibition having first exhibited with Kick Gallery in February 2011.
Contemplating Colour runs until June 9 2012.
